RETOUCH TOOL  set to SMUDGE
Adjust your settings as shown.
Click View/Zoom by 1 adjust size of retouch tool as needed for the area your working in.  Smaller sizes for smaller areas.

Adjust Opacity as needed.
HOW DO I KNOW WHEN TO ADJUST OPACITY?
If your smudging looks like streaks instead of blending, lower the opacity.

Left click hold and drag to blend the pixels for smoothness.  Be very careful in eye, nostrils, and mouth area... you don't want to distort, just blend.

Zoom in and out of areas as needed.

Do the entire picture, adjusting the size for the area your working in.

Moving in the direction of the flow is a plus.  Example.. if your working on the nose... it goes up and down... thus if you drag across the nose where you shouldn't you will get a not so desired effect.

Not

Smudge with the flow of the area.  In other words, drag your mouse in the direction the light or dark section is going in. See Nostril bottom left .... see the light spot sorta curves left and down...... smudge that left and down.. gently..... so that you don't lose it, but merely blend it.  Always go with the flow.

Have you noticed... there appears to be a few flaws.  Pencil writing on the image to the right and some sort of intrusion in the center bottom ....  since I am restoring it.. the pencil marks should be gone and I want that thing out of the center bottom.

You learned how to clone already on the scratches.  Clone the Pencil marks gone.
And I used Smudge to get rid of the intrusion center bottom by just smudging and draggin into that area and right off the bottom of the canvas......

SMUDGING HAIR
lower the size of the brush and go with the flow.

Once the person is done and you are ready to work on the background you have some options...  You can continue to smudge it... or do what I like to do which is a quick way out lol....

I use the LASSO TOOL
Set to freehand via the Tools Palette.

trace around your person by left click hold and drag.  Getting close to edges but not inside of the body.

End your trace at the point you started.
Click Selections Choose Invert
Now we can edit the background as we please.
For a soft effect and good blending I will use Gaussian Blurr.
Click Effects/Blurr/Gaussian Blurr set at about 29/Click Ok
That was quick and easy once my selection was traced with the Lasso Tool.
Click Selections/Select All and clean up any edges of the body by using Smudge technique.
My left shoulder shows some undesireable dark spot where my lasso didn't get in close enough.. a simple smudging job will blend that in.

Just like many many images I have seen.... the whack it off removing part of the head.  Next Lesson will be replacing .... what isn't there... the top of the head and adding some space above the head.
